As the New Year approaches, non-government organizations focused on animal welfare and environmental protection have joined forces to campaign against firecracker use in Quezon City.
At the "Iwas Paputoxic" event, EcoWaste Coalition and the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) encouraged the public to forgo firecrackers this New Year to protect pets and minimize pollution. The groups staged a pet parade at several major shopping centers. Pet owners, lovingly referred to as "fur-parents," showcased their pets to draw attention to how fireworks' loud sounds and smoke can stress and harm animals.
Animal welfare advocate Atty. Anna Cabrera explained that the loud explosions from firecrackers can scare animals, triggering stress reactions like shaking. She urged pet owners to keep their pets safely indoors during New Year festivities.
Fireworks don't just disturb pets, they also seriously impact the environment. The pollution they generate poses health risks, particularly for kids and older adults. Aileen Lucero from EcoWaste Coalition stressed that New Year celebrations in 2026 should be mindful of people, animals, and the planet.
