The Department of Health (DOH) said on Thursday, June 26, that there is no scientific evidence that can back up claims that "tuob" or steam inhalation is an effective preventive measure or cure for COVID-19 infection.
Steam inhalation refers to the process of inhaling steam from hot water, usually mixed with salt or lemon. Health experts said the practice of "tu-ob", or steam inhalation therapy, has been used to provide relief of respiratory ailments, such as nasal congestion and coughs, which are symptoms experienced in COVID-19.
However, steam inhalation therapy does not kill SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19.
According to the DOH, even the Center for Disease Control and the World Health Organization have refuted claims that steam inhalation can cure COVID-19. There is currently no scientific study that can prove such a claim.
Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire also warned that steam inhalation may even further spread the virus. She noted that improper use of "tuob" could result in vision impairment, skin irritation, burns, and increased risk of skin cancer.
Also, she added that there is a possibility that steam inhalation may increase risks of viral spread. Steam inhalation also increases nasal discharge, which may possibly cause contamination when one sneezes or coughs.
A group of 13 medical societies also released a statement saying steam inhalation "may even be precarious, if done by an infected individual, as it may facilitate spread if done communally."
"Because steam inhalation does not kill the virus, and may cause potential harm, we cannot in good conscience, endorse its use as preventive or curative measure," said in the joint statement by the medical societies, including the Central Visayas chapter of the Philippine College of Physicians.
Health experts reminded the public that nothing can beat the minimum health standards in fighting COVID-19 infection such as wearing masks, handwashing and physical distancing. (FCSC)
