Napolcom highlights use of whistle for crime prevention

BAGUIO — The National Police Commission in Cordillera highlighted the use of 'whistle' in crime prevention as it launched the observance of National Crime Prevention Week (NCPW).
With the theme "Mamamayang Mapagmasid, Kapayapaan ang Maihahatid", Napolcom - CAR spearheaded the NCPW 2017 launching during the September 1 Baguio Day Program at the Baguio Convention Center through simultaneous blowing of whistles participated in by city officials, guests and the public.
Lawyer Costa Joy Anniban of Napolcom explained that the "Pito Tayo Laban sa Krimen" (Let us use whistle in fighting crime) program aims to provide specific mechanism for individuals and communities to have an active role in reducing the opportunities for offenders by enticing citizens to use whistle in attracting attention and preventing crime.
The whistle is a good warning device as it is audible at much greater distance than the human voice, she said, as she solicited the support and cooperation of the people on this for their personal safety. The whistle when used properly is a highly effective deterrent to street crimes.
The "Pito Tayo Laban Sa Krimen" is also promoted in schools to enable students to help prevent crime and maintain safety. This complements the government's advocacy on the creation of Student Crime Prevention Committees.
Other activities set for NCPW 2017 are radio/TV guesting and school symposium on public safety, tree - planting activity in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and an on-the-spot painting contest in partnership with Baguio Artist group, "Pasakalye".
The annual observance of NCPW every first week of September is by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 461 signed by then President Fidel Valdez Ramos in 1994. (PIA)
