Animal raisers told to follow protocol as bird flu crisis ends

BACOLOD — The Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) has urged animal raisers in Negros Occidental to follow the protocol on animal health as the bird flu crisis ended.
Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena said Thursday the pronouncement made by the Department of Agriculture (DA) will fully erase the "fear" created by the outbreak even among provinces outside Luzon like Negros Occidental.
It is already manifested by the increases in demand and prices of poultry and poultry products in the province for the last two weeks, said Decena.
For dressed chicken, a total increase of P2.14 per kilogram for the last two weeks was noted by the PVO.
Regarding the request of two big associations of gamefowl breeders in Negros Occidental to extend the shipment ban, he said animal movement regulation is ordered by the DA through a memorandum circular.
"Thus, we must abide the order of Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol," said Decena, adding that "lifting of travel ban has scientific basis which we must follow."
Upon declaring that the bird flu outbreak is over, the agriculture chief announced that recovery works will also start.
Piñol said he signed the circular lifting the quarantine restrictions in the seven-kilometer controlled area radius around the town of San Luis in Pampanga, and in towns of Jaen and San Isidro in Nueva Ecija.
This is upon the recommendations made by the biosecurity experts on August 31, he said.
This means that poultry and poultry products from the affected areas could now be transported to other destinations or markets.
Piñol, however, said quarantine restrictions and surveillance are still in place in the one-kilometer radius of the three towns.
Farmers will only be allowed to raise chicken, ducks and quails again after 90 days from the day the disinfection of the areas ended, he added. (PNA)
