'Share lessons of our forefathers,' historian says

KAWIT, Cavite — A Cavite historian here has urged teachers and educators to "share the lessons from mistakes and defects which led to our past leaders' failures and misfortunes" aside from the country's history of triumphs and highlights on our forefather's heroism, bravery and accomplishments.
In his talk before Cavite-based history and social studies educators at the Baldomero Aguinaldo Museum here, Dr. Pablo R. Iya, Cavite Studies Center (CSC) director and known Kabitenyo historian, revealed the various conflicts that led to the downfall of the First Republic that President Emilio Aguinaldo established in 1898.
Iya highlighted the role of history as a discipline "na magsisilbing salamin, tagapagturo, at gabay ng mga tao para makamit ang ganap na pa-gunlad at pagbabago" (to serve as a mirror, teacher and guide for the people as we aspire for development and change).
The three-part lecture dwelt on the leadership style of President Emilio Aguinaldo, which brought the domination of the "haves" (term for the intellect and the rich) – which sparked the series of conflicts in Aguinaldo's government.
Iya also discussed the alleged corrupt practices, maltreatment and harassment done by Aguinaldo's Cabinet; and the relationship of the Church and the State, "which issues, I can say, are haunting us 'till this day."
By knowing and understanding our forefather's mistakes, the present generation – as future leaders – "could learn and correct" as they help shape the future of our country –"something that is peaceful, bountiful, honorable, just, free and convenient for all," added Iya.
Iya also disclosed that the successful establishment of Aguinaldo's Revolutionary Government was through the support of the people. "kung walang mamamayan, walang bayan," (No citizenry support, no country).
The lecture forms part of the month-long celebration which the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) lined up under the theme: "Kasaysayan-Susi Tungo sa Nasyonalismo't Pambansang Kamalayan (History: Key towards Nationalism and National Awareness).
The History Month celebration was focused on awakening nationalism among the present generation by connecting the lessons "then to now," through the understanding of important historical events. (PNA)
