Dumaguete mayor says respect NIR abolition

DUMAGUETE — Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo is asking Negrenses to respect the decision of President Rodrigo R. Duterte to abolish the Negros Island Region (NIR).
The mayor acknowledged that government had to dissolve the Negros Island Region due to lack of funds as manifested by the national authorities, according to City Public Information Officer Dems Rey Demecillo on Friday.
Generally, the public here respect the President's decision and officials of both Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental say their joint projects will continue despite the abolition.
Earlier, those supporting the creation of NIR also expressed doubt if it can be accomplished also due to possible lack of budget, while some say NIR would have been a "test case" for federalism.
Demecillo said that that mayor, nevertheless, opined that if only NIR was created through legislation, the merger of the two provinces would have been permanent.
Still, Mayor Remollo stressed the need for all concerned to respect and submit to the decision of President Duterte.
With the dissolution of NIR, Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental will revert to the administrative jurisdictions of Central Visayas and Western Visayas, respectively.
President Duterte had signed early this week Executive Order No. 38 that revoked Executive Order 138 of the previous administration creating the NIR, citing mainly budgetary constraints. (PNA)
