Provincial board members oppose coal-fired power plant in Quezon

LUCENA, Quezon — A Quezon board member and president of the Provincial Councilors' League has doused speculations and allayed concerns of residents on the proposed coal-fired power plant in Tagkawayan, Quezon.
In the proceedings of the committee hearing released on Friday, Quezon Board Member and league president Vicente Salumbides III expressed the concerns of his colleagues in the Tagkawayan Sangguniang Bayan (municipal legislative council) on the coal energy project allegedly proposed by a Korean firm.
Salumbides said that the apprehension stemmed from a sermon by a Catholic prelate during a mass when the proposed coal-fired power plant was criticized raising concerns among Tagkawayan local residents.
He said that he has sought clarification from Tagkawayan Mayor Jose Jonas Frondoso who confirmed that a representative from the Korean firm Orion Company paid a courtesy call on the mayor to present the power firm's proposal.
According to Salumbides, some members of the Sangguniang Bayan of Tagkawayan have raised concerns that such project could not push through without the prior approval from the local council.
The local lawmakers pointed out a similar situation in Atimonan, Quezon where a power plant was allegedly constructed without the Sangguniang Bayan's endorsement.
Quezon 3rd District Board Member Jet Suarez nixed such moves citing no such big project could proceed without passing through the legal procedures and requirements by the local legislative council.
Suarez clarified that as far as Quezon province is concerned, no coal-fired power plant is allowed except for Liquified Natural Gas Power Plant or the alternative energy sources like hydropower or geothermal plants.
He assured members of the town's legislative body that no power plant could be constructed without the approval even by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (provincial legislative council) or the Sangguniang Barangay (barangay legislative council). (PNA)
