Bacolod upbeat to reach tourism target for 2017

BACOLOD — Despite the minimal increase in tourist arrivals in Bacolod in the first five months of 2017, the City Tourism Office remains upbeat to achieve the 12 percent target increase this year.
Ma. Elma Gerasmo, city tourism officer, said in a report on Monday that marketing and promotion efforts for the MassKara Festival in October have been strengthened to draw more tourists.
Various gatherings will also be held in Bacolod this year, she added.
A total of 352,927 tourists visited Bacolod from January to May 2017 this year, which is 3,472 more, or only less than one percent higher than the 349,455 tourists during the same period in 2016.
In the first five months of 2017, Bacolod received 318,888 domestic tourists and 34,039 foreign guests.
The minimal growth in tourist arrivals can be attributed to the crime incidents and terror threats in the country, Gerasmo said.
Based on the Philippine Statistics Authority and the Department of Tourism 2016 Household Survey on domestic visitors, Negros Occidental, whose capital is Bacolod City, is the second most visited domestic destination in the Philippines, ranking next to the National Capital Region.
Most reported purpose of travel are pleasure and vacation, visit friends and relatives and for religious purposes and stayed in home of friends and relatives, resorts and hotels.
The survey also showed that most of the travelers spent money on transportation, shopping and food and beverages. (PNA)
