Sweet victories for ampalaya recipes in veggie cooking fest

BATANGAS — "Ampalaya Cordon Bleu" and "Ampalaya Embutido with Mango" are among the top palatable vegetable dishes using "ampalaya" as the main ingredient in Batangas province-wide "Vegetable Cooking Challenge" qualifying rounds on Friday.
In a report on Saturday, Batangas public information officer Jenelyn Aguilera, said the two recipes emerged as the top winning entries during the cooking challenge qualifying rounds as part of the province's observance of 43rd Nutrition Month this July.
Provincial Health Office (PHO) Nutrition Officers Cynthia Lacaba, Divine Bauan and Digna Ilustre supervised the vegetable cooking challenge held Friday for entries from Batangas first and second district towns.
Aguilera said the "Ampalaya Cordon Bleu" from Lian, Batangas topped among seven entries from the first district towns during the Calaca cookfest challenge.
At the same time, the "Ampalaya Embutido with Mango" entry from San Pascual, Batangas bagged the simultaneous qualifying match held in Mabini for entries from Batangas 2nd district towns.
She said constituents were amazed how the veggie dishes were cooked creatively given the distinct culinary art demonstrated by the local chefs.
The cooking challenge has chosen the "ampalaya" despite its natural bitter taste because of its high nutrient content and has since become a favorite Filipino dish through a sneaky and creative cooking.
Another cooking fest qualifying round is slated on July 18 in Agoncillo for entry dishes from Batangas third district towns.
Also, Padre Garcia town will host the veggie cooking challenge on July 19 for the 4th district towns.
The winning "ampalaya" entry dishes and specialties from each district will vie for the Grand Vegetable Cooking Challenge on July 26 at the Provincial Capitol here in culmination of the Nutrition Month celebration. (PNA)
