NIR police told: Always be armed inside stations

BACOLOD — Police units in Negros Island Region (NIR) strengthened security alert in the wake of the New People's Army (NPA) raid of a police station in the neighboring Iloilo Province.
Chief Superintendent Edmund Gonzales, acting director of Police Regional Office (PRO)-18, on Monday directed all police chiefs and station personnel to be on alert at all times.
"Police personnel should always carry their firearms inside the police station and should not be complacent," he added.
At least 50 suspected rebels raided the Maasin Municipal Police Station around 11:00 a.m. Sunday, and carted away a cache of firearms, base and hand-held radios, Hi-Lux patrol car, among others, as well as personal belongings of policemen on duty.
Gonzales stressed the need to strengthen security in all police stations and continuous engagement between the police and the community to get information needed for monitoring operations.
Policemen should never let down their guards, he added.
Major General Jon Aying, commander of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division, had earlier said the remaining four provinces under its jurisdiction with insurgency concerns include Iloilo, Capiz, Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental. (PNA)
