Project CALAX to boost growth along Cavite-Laguna corridor

SANTA ROSA, Laguna — Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark Villar on Monday said the P34.5 billion Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX) will cut travel time and boost economic growth along the Cavite-Laguna corridor.
Villar, together with top officials of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Department of Budget and Management (DBM) led Monday's ground breaking of the mega project at the Nuvali Spine Road in this city.
Villar said the mega expressway is expected to cut travel time from Sta. Rosa City, Laguna to Kawit, Cavite from 1.5 hours to only 45 minutes; decongest traffic along the busy thoroughfare; and therefore boost growth of the Cavite-Laguna corridor.
Villar described the CALAX expressway as one of the largest public-private partnership projects forged by the government and the private sector, Metro Pacific Group, chaired by Manny V. Pangilinan.
Also present in the inauguration were DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade and DBM Secretary Benjamin Diokno.
Villar boarded a backhoe during the ceremonial rites for the 45-kilometer construction work which is expected to be completed by 2020.
CALAX will connect the now operating toll expressway connecting the Cavitex and South Luzon Expressways.
CALAX will start from Cavitex in Kawit, Cavite and end at the SLEX-Mamplasan Interchange in Biñan, Laguna.
The project entails a four-lane expressway traversing the end-to-end points via the congested residential and industrial areas in Kawit, Imus, General Trias, Dasmariñas City and Silang in Cavite, up to Sta. Rosa and Biñan Cities in Laguna.
According to Villar, the components of the CALAX include eight interchanges and one main toll barrier and is expected to ease traffic congestion along the Governor's Drive, Aguinaldo Highway and Santa Rosa-Tagaytay Road.
On his part, Pangilinan said they promised to finish the project before President Rodrigo R. Duterte ends his term in 2022 in this "golden age of infrastructure."
Tugade added that economic development under President Duterte's administration is laid down and "life in this country will be as peaceful, and secure and as convenient as can be."
An estimated 5,000 jobs will be created with the construction of CALAX for three years and throughout its concession period and open more economic opportunities for those who invest, work and live around the Cavite-Laguna corridor. (PNA)
