Govt intensifies price monitoring of NFA rice in Mindanao conflict areas

MANILA — The government has intensified its monitoring of NFA rice (National Food Authority) in the market following report of hike in prices of basic commodities in conflict areas in Mindanao..
In a statement, the NFA said prices of regular and well milled rice in Lanao del Norte and neighboring provinces remained stable and even decreased by 5 percent after the siege of Marawi City, from P36/kilogram in May 22 to P34/kg, while well-milled rice (WMR) remained at P43/kg. in spite of the ongoing battle between government troops and the Maute terrorist group.
NFA administrator Jason Laureano Y. Aquino said its teams continued to monitor the rice situation not only in Mindanao but the entire country to immediately respond to any major spikes in prices and supply not only in the places affected by the emergency but also in highly populated urban centers and remote areas that are traditionally vulnerable to rice price hikes during this time when the lean months are fast approaching.
"We can never put our guard down, especially because the NFA is mandated to ensure national food security and stabilize rice supply and prices in the market at any given time," he said.
"Even as we focus our sights on what is happening in Marawi, we still have more than 100 million Filipinos banking on us to ensure that they will always have rice on their tables at any given day," he added.
The NFA has also activated its Operations Center (OPCEN) during natural or man-made calamities and emergencies to quickly and effectively respond to any need for rice by affected residents.
Meanwhile, the NFA said it had already released a total of 7,592 bags of rice as of June 5, 2017 to various relief-giving agencies and organizations for distribution to the victims of the crisis in Marawi City.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Region 12 has withdrawn 600 bags from NFA Misamis Oriental; 3,600 bags from NFA Maguindanao; and 1,867 bags from NFA Gen. Santos City.
The Office of Vice President Leni Robredo withdrew 500 bags from NFA Cagayan de Oro city and the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) of Cotabato withdrew 300 bags from NFA Iligan. The local government unit (LGU) of Iligan also withdrew 725 bags from the local NFA office. (PNA)
