Summer work program benefits 1,900 students in Pampanga

SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga — Some 1,900 disadvantaged youths are among the first batch of Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) beneficiaries in this province this summer season.
Vice-Governor Dennis Pineda, together with Provincial Employment and Services Office (PESO) Chief Luningning Vergara, on Tuesday led the orientation of the SPES beneficiaries together with their parents/guardians.
Part of the orientation is the contract signing between the beneficiaries and the Pampanga provincial government wherein the students will be deployed to the different barangays in the province to do social and office work for a maximum of 18 days.
Vergara said SPES is an excellent training ground for the students to become responsible citizens.
Hanna Pamela Escordial, who has been a SPES beneficiary for the past three years, expressed her gratitude to be among the first batch of SPES beneficiaries for this year.
"The SPES program has helped me a lot. It helped me boost my self-confidence and developed my communication skills. The money I earned during the SPES program helped me sustain my education. That's why I'm very thankful to the provincial government," she said.
SPES is a joint-employment program of the provincial government and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to help disadvantaged but deserving students in completing their education through employment during semestral break or summer vacation.
Vergara said 60 percent of their salary will come from the provincial government while the 40 percent counterpart is from DOLE. (PNA)
