MANILA — Former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Thursday insisted that President Rodrigo Duterte "knows what he is doing" with regard to the country's foreign policy on the highly disputed South China Sea.
In a press conference at the Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City, Arroyo declined to give any specific recommendation to Duterte on his approach to the maritime and territorial disputes with China, considering that the President has all the facts and information available in his hands.
"As far as I am concerned, President Duterte knows what he is doing, and I don't have any specific recommendations to make," she said.
Arroyo, however, gave a general recommendation to the National Security Council to enhance the economic relations between the Philippines and China.
"As far as China is concerned, our strategic direction should be to emphasize our economic relations and transcend, to the extent that we can, matters and issues between us," Arroyo said.
Earlier, President Duterte ordered the military to occupy Philippine islands in the disputed South China Sea to assert the country's sovereign rights. (PNA)
