ASEAN condemns bombing of Coptic churches in Egypt

MANILA — The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Tuesday strongly condemned the recent bombings of two Coptic churches in Egypt, which killed over 40 people and injured many others.
"ASEAN extends its deep sympathies and condolences to the government and peoples of the Arab Republic of Egypt, especially to the families of the victims of the terror attacks," the ASEAN foreign ministers said in a statement.
Two Coptic churches in Egypt were bombed by terrorists last April 9, Palm Sunday. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks.
ASEAN thus stressed the urgency of further strengthening regional and international cooperation in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
It noted terrorism should not be linked with beliefs or religions.
ASEAN also reiterated that all forms and manifestations of terrorism and violence are criminal and unjustifiable, "regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomever, against whomsoever committed". (PNA)
