Dagupan posts PhP120M savings last year

DAGUPAN — Mayor Belen Fernandez revealed Tuesday the city government registered P120 million savings last year, the biggest ever realized by the local government for the past three years and even in the past.
Fernandez said the savings were realized from unfilled positions in the local government and savings in the prosecution of projects but which were achieved without sacrificing public service.
This means that we did not add some more regular employees and had to contend with our present employer force, she added.
The mayor revealed that when she came to office in 2013, the city under the past administration incurred negative finances but was reversed to positive P3 million plus in just six months in office through efficient fiscal management by means of increased tax collection, belt tightening and moderation of expenses.
The P120 million savings means a lot for the city as it will enable the local government to put up more projects in the barangays and for various sectors.
She said with the savings, they can build more roads and use some of it for the rehabilitation of Tondaligan that has just been cleared of unsightly cottages and beach sheds.
The city government will also construct a SPED building for the hearing and vision-impaired children and those with autism at the West Central Elementary School.
"They have already one at the West Central School but it is not so good, so I would like to build a building that is very conducive to them," she added.
She said the city will also buy brand new heavy equipment and vehicles because all the vehicles bought by the previous city administration that were passed on to her administration were second-hand and often break down.
"We are spending too much money for the repair of these second-hand vehicles, draining the resources of the city," Fernandez said.
There will be one mini-truck for the anti-littering task force and one vehicle for personnel enforcing undisciplined citizens as provided for in an executive order, providing what is now notably known as "Artikulo Biente-Uno", one loader for Tondaligan Park Administration, one truck for the General Service Office (GSO) and one forward truck for the city engineer's office.
She said they will also rehabilitate old roads and elevate those that are flood-prone so the residents will not wade in flood during the rainy season. (PNA)
