11,500 tons of contaminated water with low levels of radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station will be released into the Pacific Ocean by Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), as part of their efforts to cool the plants' damaged reactors.
The cooling system for two of the six reactors, which are still under strict monitoring is threatened to swamp if draining will not be done. This according to them is part of what they call as "damage control".
"We have no choice but to release water tainted with radioactive materials into the ocean as safety measure", Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukido Edano, said in a televised press conference.
Four of the nuclear reactors at Fukushima Daiichi plant are being manually cooled by pouring and circulating tons of water around the reactor units. Used water, claimed to be already contaminated with radiation and other chemicals are to be dumped in the ocean, in optimism that in doing so, risk to humans and other living species in the country and nearby territories will be reduced if not totally avoided.
Meltdown in the systems of TEPCO is due to the recent 9-magnitude earthquake followed by a 15-meter high tsunami that hit Japan, particularly Fukushima, devastating the nuclear firm and its internal cooling systems. — RDP
