Metro Mayors: MMDA to handle flood control

The Mayors of Metro Manila have passed the responsibility of handling flood control to Metro Manila Development Authority.

Due to the devastation caused by flooding in the metropolis brought by typhoon "Falcon," the Metro Manila Council has agreed to give the MMDA the authority, duty, and rights to handle the problem of flooding.

Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista said that the mayors have been looking for someone to be accountable when there are floods. For this reason, the MMC issued a resolution that all flood control projects, whether local or foreign-funded, will be under the MMDA.

"We will use it for pre-calamity projects. But there are no clear guidelines on how to use the calamity fund for this. We will still have to meet with the Department of Public Works and Highways on this," added Bautista.

Bautista and other Metro Manila mayors, in addition, is expected to meet with the DPWH as well as with the Department of Budget and Management to discuss the memorandum of agreement.
