Sony Europe hacked but no confidential data lost

Sony claimed on Monday that their European subsidiary's website had been hacked but no confidential data was stolen nor published on the Internet, according to company spokeswoman Mami Imada in Tokyo.

Based on an Agence France-Presse report, the hacking was related with the latest online attacks targeting the Japanese electronics giant. This incident sent company shares down more than two percent.

The London-based head office of Sony Europe on Saturday morning discovered the attack where personal information about the firm's certified trainers for professional broadcasting equipment was targeted.

"It is true that the website was illegally accessed," said Imada. "But all the data that the hacker seems to have copied was information already available on the company website," she added.

In addition, the data was already open for anyone to view but the hacker accessed the information through an illegal path.

Meanwhile, another Japanese game maker named Nintendo claimed that the server of its US unit had been hacked a few weeks ago.
