President Benigno Aquino III will be the first to submit under the government's campaign against public smoking in Metro Manila.
The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) started apprehending smokers seen smoking along public places and transportation terminals around Metro Manila.
According to Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte, the President himself will strictly follow the law. She added that even being a smoker, Pnoy will still implement the Republic Act 9211- an act regulating the packaging, use, sale distribution and advertisements of tobacco products.
Violators will be charged PhP 500 as fine or will be demanded to render 8 hours community service.
Statistics released by the Department of Health (DOH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) show that every year, 87,600 Filipinos are killed due to cigarettes smoking, resulting to an annual economic loss of about P148 billion. — ARA
