Department of Health Center for Health DevelopmentNational Capital Region (DOH CHD-NCR) Regional Director Eduardo C. Janairo today ordered the disinfection and sanitation of uncollected garbage and refuse lying wide open on streets around Metro Manila.
"We will not wait for an outbreak of various illnesses like flu, fever, diarrhea, cholera, and skin problems to happen that's is why sanitation and disinfection teams were already dispatched around specific areas to disinfect the mounds of garbage that are accumulating," Director Janairo said.
"We aim for prevention and we will not wait for diseases and other harmful bacteria to spread in populated areas. We should protect our health and that of our children because they are most vulnerable in contracting illness when exposed to these wastes," Dr. Janairo emphasized.
The recent monsoon has left huge amounts of trash, junk, and litter on the streets which pose a threat to public health and the environment. Swarms of flies hover over garbage on the sides of roads, close to homes and evacuation areas.
Open wastes such as excreta, liquid and solid waste from households and the community, are sources of serious health hazards and may lead to the spread of infectious diseases. Unattended garbage attracts flies and rats that can spread disease. Liquid waste that decomposes is a source of fetid odor and leads to unhealthy conditions and cause health problems.
Secretary of Health Enrique T. Ona has directed the disinfection and sanitation activity to prevent any possible outbreak of diseases that can be brought about by harmful microorganisms and diseases from diffused garbage and human wastes.
"I strongly advised people to avoid climbing, playing, or picking up leftovers among clusters of garbage. For the waste collectors, be sure to wear protective gear like boots and gloves. Those who cannot shun away from collecting scraps to sell for profit, be sure to wear slippers and wash thoroughly both hands and feet with soap and water after coming from the garbage dumps," Dr. Janairo said. -
