Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago nominated Prima Ballerina Lisa Macuja-Elizalde for the National Artist award, naming her as "ballerina of the people."

Santiago officially nominated Macuja-Elizalde as National Artist for Dance via a letter to the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

Santiago said that no female ballerina has yet surpassed the recognition and pride Lisa Macuja-Elizalde has brought to the Philippines.

"She is the embodiment of talent, creativity and imagination, technical proficiency of the highest order, grace, and humanity that makes her worthy of the title of National Artist," Santiago added.

The senator also filed Senate Resolution No. 808 requesting on President Benigno Simeon Aquino III to grant her the honor. The Senator even made a public announcement of what she did on the social networking site Twitter.

Santiago said that she was an "avid fan" of Macuja-Elizalde, who was the foremost foreign soloist to join the prestigious Kirov Ballet (known as the Imperial Russian Ballet).

She also said that she is supporting Dolphy's nomination as National Artist for Cinema. They (Dolphy and Lisa) both deserve to be National Artists, because they represent the best in their respective fields, she added.

Meanwhile, Macuja-Elizalde said in her official Facebook page, "Dear Senator Defensor-Santiago, I am deeply honored by Senate Resolution No. 808 that you filed last July 2, 2012 and your letter to NCCA Chairman Felipe De Leon Jr. dated July 5, 2012. May I just say that I was speechless when my parents called me up while I was out of the country a few days ago to let me know about your extremely generous and flattering actions. I am humbled by the kind words that you wrote about me to nominate me for the highest award for an artist in our country, The National Artist Award. Thank you for fighting for me! Thank you for the recognition and the support! But, most importantly, thank you for watching my performances at every opportunity."

Aside from being known as prima ballerina, Macuja-Elizalde was also teaching ballet in Project Ballet Futures, a dance teaching program for local public schools in Pasay City as well as in Manila.
