Hundreds of Cordillera politicians from the different provinces of the region are expected to take oath as new members of the ruling and the fastest growing political party in the country today, the Liberal Party.
Ifugao Congressman Teddy Baguilat Jr. said that the new members of the local LP chapter will be inducted by no less than President Benigno S. Aquino III on Monday, June 25, at the Benguet State University in La Trinidad, Benguet.
Baguilat said that the LP regional chapter has got word from politicians around the region signifying their willingness to join the LP, which he said is good for the party.
"Our intention is to strengthen the Liberal Party in the region," he stressed.
Baguilat said that Kalinga Congressman Manuel Agyao will be 'the catch of the day.' Agyao was personally invited by Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jessse Robredo to join the LP.
Benguet Governor Nestor Fongwan is also expected to formalize his intention to join the LP together with other local officials and politicians in the province.
Baguilat said the President has been attending the regional convention and induction of LP in various areas in the country.
Expected to join the President are DOTC Sec. Mar Roxas, DILG Sec. Robredo, Deputy House Speaker Rep. Lorenzo Tanada, former Isabela Governor Grace Padaca, and regional representatives lead by Chairman Leandro Yangot, Benguet Cong. Ronald Cosalan, Mountain Province Cong. Maximo Dalog, and Ifugao Gov. Eugene Balitang.
The Liberal Party was founded on January 19, 1946 by Manuel Roxas, the first President of the Third Philippine Republic. It was formed by Pres. Roxas from what was once the "Liberal Wing" of the old Nacionalista Party. Two more presidents of the Philippines elected into office came from the LP: Elpidio Quirino and Diosdado Macapagal.
Two other presidents came from the ranks of the LP, former members of the Party who chose to follow a different path and joined the Nacionalistas: Ramon Magsaysay and Ferdinand Marcos. -
