Leptospirosis cases in Capiz have reached 35 in count, according to the Provincial Health Office. This figure recorded on the first 10 months of the year is higher than last year's 20 cases.
Data from the Capiz Epidemiological Surveillance and Response Unit disclosed that from January to October 29, there were 35 recorded leptospirosis cases in the province with six fatalities. The highest recorded cases were in Pontevedra with six and five each in President Roxas and Roxas City.
Capiceños, who died of said case, came from Agambulong in Jamindan, Quinayoya in Dao, Lanot in Roxas City, Balaring in Ivisan, Bantigue in Panay and Lantangan in Pontevedra town.
Earlier, Provincial Health Office Medical Specialist Dr. Evelyn Bolido has called on Capiceños to seek immediate consultation in cases where there are manifestations of headache, muscle pain, high grade fever, reddish eyes and vomiting among others, after exposure to water contaminated by urine of infected animals.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that could be acquired through exposure to water contaminated by urine of infected animals, especially rats, she said.
Bolido explained that after five to 14 days incubation period, the patient can experience the symptoms. "In some cases, the same could result in complications such as in the liver, kidney, spleen or brain which could be fatal if not given immediate proper medical attention," she said.
On the other hand, Department of Health Assistant Secretary Eric Tayag revealed that leptospirosis can also be acquired from dogs, goats and other animals. He explained that the disease can enter a person's body when contaminated flood waters touch wounds or the eyes. Tayag said rat's waste could also be mixed with the food that is why it is important to keep the surroundings clean. -
