A few days before the grand opening of Marikina City's Christmas bazaar, Vice Mayor Jose Fabian Cadiz on Monday declared Marikina River as 'No Tiangge Zone.'
The declaration was based on the city's Resolution No. 158, s. 2011, declaring Marikina River as a "No Tiangge Zone" starting this year.
Cadiz said the resolution was issued to prevent 'tiangge' or bazaars to be put up at the river banks.
"Aside from the continuous rise of the river's water level every time heavy rains occur, we also want to avoid the accumulation of trash and garbage in the river," Cadiz added.
Meanwhile, Marikina Mayor Del De Guzman is also in high hopes that people will still patronize the bazaar despite re-location of its venue.
"Celebrating Christmas should not only be fun but safe as well. We should take care of our consumers and retailers, as well as the Marikina River," said De Guzman.
The local chief executive added that different themes will be featured every week to add more excitement to the Christmas season.
The new location of the Christmas bazaar will be at the Central Parking Area in front of the Marikina City Hall.
Grand opening will be held on Friday, October 28 and will run until January 15, 2012. -
