Manila residents experienced a cold and rainy weekend as Typhoon Bebeng passes Central Luzon.
The unexpected heavy rains, according to Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), flooded a number of areas in Metro Manila Sunday afternoon, causing heavy traffic which lasted for hours. Moreover, it made some of the roads impassable for light vehicles.
Some of the areas swamped by knee-deep floods were identified by MMDA Metrobase Monitoring System- The part of C-5 near Ortigas Avenue and Eagle Street, Tandang Sora flyover to Commonwealth Avenue's east bound and Quezon Avenue approaching to Biak na Bato.
Also, The C-5 Katipunan flyover, East Avenue along the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the portion of Marcos highways along De la Paz were also affected.
Roger Nicodemos of MMDA Flood Control confirmed in an interview that heavy rains can possibly rise flood waters up to about 27 cm, reaching half of the height of a normal sedan tire. But once the rain stops, flood will drain quickly.
In the meantime, the rescue personnel from the Southern Police District (SPD) were assigned to monitor flooded areas in the Southern Metro Manila.
Chief Inspector Jenny Tecson, head of SPD Public Relations Unit said that knee-high floods were observed in the areas of Arnaiz Avenue near Chino Roces Avenue, and Ayala Avenue extension corner Yakal street, by five in the afternoon.
Tecson added that their personnel were given orders to be alert if the heavy rains continue, so they can extend immediate help and rescue especially to flood-prone areas. — ARA
